Presenter Profile – Loretta Simmons
How did you first connect with GDR?
In 1999 after hearing music that was so delightfully nostalgic and not broadcast on radio elsewhere, I discovered Golden Days Radio, who at that time were calling for volunteers. I became a member and joined the small but enthusiastic team as receptionist and general factotum at the GDR studios located then at Caulfield Racecourse, and broadcasting on a limited basis.
Why did you want to be a presenter?
After being invited to train as a presenter in 2000, I was rostered to Saturdays and went to air in January 2001.
What experience do you want to give your listeners?
To keep the magic of wireless alive for those who can remember, and attract those who would like to know. The entertainment focus of my own home life was the wireless set; with music, radio plays and short wave broadcasts, setting the scene for a lifelong love of radio. I like to think that from the time my listener turns on their radio to the time they tune out, if at all, they feel they are in the company of a close friend and the companionship and “conversation” we share of the tapestry of entertainment that is ageless, bonds us. That is ‘community’.
